NGO 2017: Understanding the Important Roles and Responsibilities of Non-governmental Organization in the Society

Non-governmental organizations (NGO) are independent and non-profit organizations aiming to provide wide range of social activities, and are usually funded by donations and run by volunteers. Non-government organizations are also referred to as community agencies or non-profits, providing variety of services and activities in the community and at different stages of the justice system. Non-government organizations are lead by volunteer board of directors working with volunteers, for delivery of various programs such as social responsibility and social awareness, environmental protection, healthcare campaigns, elimination of hunger and poverty, women empowerment and children protection, and equality.

Some non-governmental organizations are dealing with public education campaigns about social policy issues relating to the development of safe and empowered communities. Some non-governmental organizations directly work with the criminal justice system such as witnesses, victims, and offenders and the activities and services may include counseling and information dissemination of victims, giving assistance in obtaining pardons, creating victim-offender mediation programs, or supervising the release of offenders. Some community agencies are involved in providing support and services to children, parents, spouses and extended families involved in divorce or family law courts. Non-government organization volunteers come from various sectors of the society, mostly are private individuals, groups and companies which include students, social workers, educators, businessmen, health care professionals, child welfare workers, athletes, lawyers, environment enthusiasts, and celebrities.

When it comes to the type of non-government organizations, they are categorized as charitable orientation, service orientation, participatory orientation and empowering orientation. Charitable orientation includes activities and programs that are directed to meeting the needs of poor people, and these are funded by donations without too much participation from the beneficiaries. Service orientation includes non-government organization programs and activities that include family planning, provision of healthcare services, legal services, and education services, where people are expected to participate in its implementation. Participatatory orientation are self-help projects wherein the locals are directly involved in the implementation of the project by contributing tools, materials, land, labor, cash, etc. Empowering orientation primary objective is to help poor people in developing a clear understanding of the economic, political and social factors affecting their lives, strengthening their awareness and developing their talents and skills to be able to gain full control of their lives.
Where To Start with Resources and More

By the level of operations, non-government organizations are also categorized as community-based organizations, city-wide organizations, national non-governmental organizations, and international NGOs. Community-based organizations arise out of people’s initiatives, raising the consciousness of the urban poor and helping them in understanding their rights to access needed services and provision of those services. On the other hand, city-wide non-government organizations may include coalitions of business, chambers of industry and commerce, educational or ethnic groups, and associations of different community organizations.
